September is Workforce Development Professionals Month

Staff at the Workforce Center of Will County are certified and ready to assist residents with job search and skills training

Since 2012, the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP) has chosen September to raise awareness about the importance of workforce development to the national economy. The NADWP recognizes the critical link workforce development professionals provide between businesses, job seekers, education and training resources. Locally, the Workforce Center of Will County (WCWC) professionals have worked hard to attain credentials and certifications specific to the employment industry.

“I am very proud of Susan Flessner, manager of the WCWC, and her entire staff for the high level of professionalism, employer connections, and training maintained by this department,” said Will County Executive Denise Winfrey. “All of them work hard to provide important services to both employers and job seekers. As our county continues to grow, so do job opportunities and the need for qualified, well-trained people to fill these jobs.”

Flessner said the staff is certified through the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches as well as the Center for Credentialing and Education. The training the staff receives from these organizations ensures they are up to date on the latest trends in job searches and job training.

“Our staff possess a wide range of skills and they are well trained and ready to assist our residents in job searches,” she said. “Additionally, we have staff who specialize in working with local businesses to address their workforce recruiting and training needs.”

Some of the certifications include Certified Professional Resume Writer, Certified Professional Career Coach, and Global Career Development Facilitator. The staff offers individual guidance as well as facilitates monthly workshops on a wide variety of job search topics.

Lisa Borelli has been with the Workforce Center for 12 years. She is a Global Career Development Facilitator, Certified Professional Resume Writer, and Certified Professional Career Coach with the Workforce Center of Will County. Borelli said she is better equipped to serve the customers with this specialized training.

“Our customers deserve the best - the tools, coaching, strategies, inspiration, and motivation to develop their career paths, seek satisfying employment, determine career focus, target companies and positions, and move forward in their careers,” said Borelli. “By obtaining these certifications, I am better equipped with relevant skills and knowledge to assist others in planning careers and obtaining meaningful work.”

Cleopatra Cook works for Employment and Employer Services. She has partnered with the Workforce Center for three years as a Certified Business Engagement Professional, Certified Business Services Professional and
Certified Professional Resume Writer. She works with local businesses seeking qualified employees.

“I engage local businesses by assessing their needs and building relationships,” Cook said. “Then I am able to work with our job seekers to create resumes that develop into interviews and job placements.”

Finding a job can be challenging at any time and finding a job during a pandemic has presented an entire new set of challenges. Flessner said the staff works hard to continue to offer their important services in innovative, alternative ways.

“The pandemic has definitely changed the way we are able to deliver our services,” Flessner said. “Instead of coming into our center for training or to check the job board, we are offering our workshops via Zoom and job seekers can access the job board on line.

“We are also getting creative and offering ‘drive through’ job fairs. The next one will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Weds. Sept. 23 at the Frankfort Township office, 11000 W. Highway in Frankfort. Job seekers will stay in their cars and be able to drive through and speak with representatives from several companies looking to hire.”

The Workforce Center of Will County is located at 2400 Glenwood Avenue in Joliet. For more information, call (815) 727-4444 or visit www.will.works.
