Will County Land Use Department

Personnel of the Will County Land Use Department are charged by the County Executive and the County Board to serve as the citizens' land use stewards, providing guidance and assistance for the lifecycle development of the built and natural environments within unincorporated and, in some instances, incorporated portions of the County. The individual and collective efforts of Land Use team members accomplish this charge through efficient and effective planning, regulatory and procedural systems that are applied in a transparent, consistent, equitable and courteous manner.

The department consists of four divisions: Administration and Enforcement, Community Development, Development Services, Resource Recovery & Energy (RR&E)

SmartGov Public Portal

The Will County Land Use Department maintains a cloud-based permitting system.  Through this online system, contractors and applicants apply for permits, submit documents, schedule inspections, pay fees, print their permit, and view detailed information regarding their permits.  To access the Will County Land Use Department SmartGov Public Portal, please click on the link below.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: CURRENT WILL COUNTY LAND USE DEPARTMENT OFFICE POLICIES

Effective Tuesday, February 16, 2021, the Will County Land Use Department will begin allowing additional limited public access to the 1st floor office which includes public interaction at the workstations. We desire to maintain a safe workplace and adopt practices protecting the health of employees and customers while ensuring the continuity of business operations.

  • The Department will maintain normal business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are located at 58 E. Clinton St., Suite 100, Joliet, IL 60432.
  • All customers entering the office must check their temperature at the temperature check station.
  • All customers must wear face coverings.
  • Customer capacity is limited to six (6).
  • Permanent sneeze guards have been installed at workstations and the reception counter on the 1st floor.
  • Customers will only be allowed to interact with staff at the 1st floor workstations.
  • The Department encourages customers to use the online permitting portal and to conduct business by mail, E-mail, or telephone. You can access the portal through this link: https://co-will-il.smartgovcommunity.com/Public/Home
  • Inspections are being performed in accordance with office protocol which is posted on the portal. You can also use the portal to schedule inspections or call us at (815) 774-3321. Please include your contact information, permit number, property address, the specific inspection(s) being requested, and a desired inspection date.

The Will County Land Use Department appreciates your patience and understanding during this time. These operational guidelines are consistent with Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recommendations. Operations of the Will County Land Use Department fall under both Essential Infrastructure (construction, sold waste and recycling, etc.) and Essential Government Functions. For inquiries and questions, please call (815) 774-3321.

NOTICE: VIRTUAL MEETING INFORMATION FOR MAY 5, 2021 HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

In accordance with Tier 1 mitigation efforts instituted for Region 7, the May 5, 2021 Will County Historic Preservation Commission meeting will be held via videoconference/telephonically through the Webex Events platform. The meeting begins at 7:00pm. While the Will County Office Building located at 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet will be open, a limited number of people will be allowed inside which includes staff, Commissioners, applicants, and the public. Applicants and the public are encouraged to participate remotely by attending the virtual meeting, submitting comments before the meeting via email, or calling in during the meeting.

Please take notice that the regular monthly meeting of the Will County Historic Preservation Commission scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. has been cancelled. The meeting was to be held at the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet, IL. The next HPC meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet, IL.
