Frankfort Township begins twice-monthly electronic recycling service

FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP -- Frankfort Township has become host to Will County’s newest permanent electronic recycling site. Its first collection date will be Tuesday, March 13.

The site, which will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, is at the Township Hall, 11000 W. Lincoln Highway, Frankfort.

Marta Keane, the county’s Recycling Specialist with the Resource Recovery and Energy Division of the Land Use Department, said, “Will County residents may bring a large variety of electronics, including the 17 items banned from disposal in Illinois, plus many additional items such as power tools, hair dryers and microwave ovens, to this and all of the collection sites.”

There is a limit of two television sets per vehicle; identification is required to prove residency in a community that is entirely or partially in Will County. 

The Frankfort Township site fills the time slot previously used by Joliet. Keane explained that the city’s new contract with Waste Management includes free curbside pickup of electronics for those who have Joliet garbage/recycling service. Residents should call (800) 449-7587 to schedule an appointment for pickup.

“Will County offers seven locations with year-round hours to make recycling of electronics as convenient as possible,” Keane said. “In addition, the county offers several one-day collection events on Saturdays.”

Unlike the one-day collection events, which now require them, no appointments are necessary to drop off electronics at the permanent sites.

The service is funded by the County and electronics manufacturers. The Land Use Department is under County Executive Larry Walsh’s office.
