Comments accepted until Dec. 4 for DuPage River Watershed Study
The U.S. Army Corps of Enginners (USACE), Chicago District is accepting written comments from residents until Dec. 4. Anyone wishing to submit information, can email: chicagodistrict.pao@usace.army.mil. More information about the study can be found at the website: www.lrc.usace.army.mil
The USACE hosted two public meetings in Will County to inform residents about the study of the potential effects associated with flooding within the DuPage River watershed. During these meetings, residents were encouraged to share their personal experiences with flooding in this region.
The DuPage River and tributaries drain approximately 353 square miles in suburban Cook, DuPage and Will Counties in Illinois. The study area has experienced rapid development over the past several decades, and currently includes 40 communities and approximately 900,000 residents. Major storm events occurred in the basin in 1996, 2008, 2009, and most recently in April 2013 resulting in overbank flooding in at least 20 communities and causing significant damage to residential and non-residential structures, critical infrastructure and the closure of two major interstate highways (I-80 and I-55) for several days.
