  Geographic Information Systems

The role of the Department of Geographic Information Systems is to coordinate and provide GIS services to Will County Departments, outside agencies, and the public, with responsibility in managing the hardware, software, data, maps, and interactive applications that encompass the entire GIS.

Many County Departments are benefiting from the tools provided within GIS. A few current examples of how GIS is being implemented include:

The Supervisor of Assessments - using GIS to build and maintain the County's 260,000 parcels.

Emergency 911 - manages an up-to-date street centerline network with address ranges to route emergency vehicles to distress calls.

The Will County Health Department - mapping positive results from mosquito trap locations to find focus areas for controlling West Nile Virus.

The Emergency Management Agency - used GPS receivers to collect damage assessment data after a tornado struck the western side of Joliet in 2003.

Current and projected departments utilizing GIS services include:

  • CountyBoard
  • County Clerk
  • Supervisor of Assessments
  • Emergency 911
  • Forest Preserve District
  • Health Department
  • Land Use Department
  • Managment Information Services
  • Recorder of Deeds
  • Records Management
