  Impoundment of the Biting Animal

Animal bites or abrasions are required to be reported to the Will County Animal Control office. The owner of the pet involved in the exposure is required to place the animal under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Failure to comply with this requirement of the state law may result in prosecution.

If the biting animal is a stray and has not been captured, it is important that you immediately take the following steps.

› Call your local police authorities and Will County Animal Control.
› Get an accurate description of the animal.
› Identify the area in which the animal may be found.
› Alert neighbors to notify you if they see the animal.

If the biting animal is currently inoculated against rabies, the animal may be confined at home and must be examined by a licensed veterinarian twenty-four (24) hours after the exposure and again ten (10) days later.

If the animal is not currently inoculated against rabies, the Illinois law requires that it be confined for at least ten (10) days at a veterinary clinic under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. If at the end of the ten day period the animal is healthy, the veterinarian will vaccinate the animal against rabies prior to releasing the animal from impoundment.

All biting animals considered wildlife must be tested for rabies.
